"I'm a published freakin' author"- Jane the Virgin (2017), Amandeep Ahuja (2022)

Updated: Jan 27, 2023

The Frustrated Women's Club was my dream. It was not the dream I had at age 14 when I first started writing a plagiarised version of Pride and Prejudice. Oh, that's a fun story. It does make me look rather tragic but I shall share it anyway.

When I was fourteen years old, I had decided that classic English Literature was the best thing to happen to my life since the removal of my braces. Needless to say, I was a virgin in school, had had no dates, went to my school dance without a date (this one was by choice, though, truthfully), but that might not have been because I was a saddo. It might have been because I went to an all-girls school- so much so that my first proper interaction with boys didn't happen until Freshers' Week at uni. Wow, I didn't mean to come off this tragic but there you have it.

Anyway- at age fourteen I decided that I had to be an author and it had to happen right away. So I started writing my first book- Mother, Daughter and Marriage. It was about a mother who wanted her daughter to get married. The first sentence in the book was "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife. And a single woman in possession of a mother must be in want of a husband." I didn't get that book published.

But then at age twenty-six, I became the daughter from Mother, Daughter and Marriage. I became the single woman in possession of a mother- but I was not in want of a husband. My life became a horrific combination of Indian Matchmaking and Love Island and I did not like it one bit. I rambled on in my journals about how much I wanted to shoot someone in the face- myself most of the times, but the occasional arranged marriage set-up would also be very much in the running to receive a gunshot wound to their face.

Journal entries soon took the form of fiction and then some moons later, the book was born. My brain birthed The Frustrated Women's Club.
